First volunteers from Warwick Medical School
Tuesday 15th April 2008
One of Antara's first UK volunteers inspires a new generation at Warwick Medical School, and a slightly older generation!
This summer, alongside fellow students from Leeds, two graduate-entry medical students from Warwick will be heading to Antara. Alex Lowe (graduate in Neuroscience) and Duncan McLean (graduate in Biology) were inpsired to apply after 'F of A UK' committee member Richard Dickson-Lowe raised awareness of Antara's work in Warwick Medical School.
Alex is interested particularly in rehabilitation, with previous experience in working with neurological impairments or injury, whilst Duncan is interested in comparing patient experiences in India to those of patients in the UK.
Richard was one of Antara's first volunteers from the UK and the experiences at Antargram left an indelible impression. Richard remained in touch with 'F of A UK's developments over the years, and when Richard headed to Warwick, he took up the challenge of initiating volunteering and other activities in support of Antara.
Richard's parents Stan Lowe and Jane Dickson-Lowe are now actively involved in 'Friends of Antara UK', and planning a second visit to Antara to develop new means to offer support from the UK.
It seems Richard's enthusiasm is spreading and we hope that the two volunteers from Warwick will return to start a successful support group along similar lines to the one at Leeds University.
Alex writes "....on my return I will work with other medical students to increase awareness of 'Friends of Antara UK', and organise fundraising events to support Antara in providing its valuable services to patients".
