Research planned on Child Mental Illness
Tuesday 4th December 2007
'Friends of Antara UK's first research project is planned on Child Mental Health:
Every year 'Friends of Antara UK' sends between ten and fifteen volunteers from the UK to live and work with Antara. Almost all volunteers are healthcare, psychology or social work students and many are graduates. Earlier this year 'F of A UK' was approached by Emily Doncaster, a psychology graduate and research assistant at Leeds University, with a request to conduct research out in India with Antara.
Research and cooperation is 'F of A UK's most under-developed area of support, so we were delighted when Emily proposed a study into "The Effects of Childhood Mental Illness on the Family Unit in Resource-Deprived Areas".
The study will look at the psychological, social and economic impacts of a child's illness on families, and how this differs according to the fmaily background. It aims to shed light on the significance of childhood mental illness and to guide future interventions by child guidance teams such as the one at Antara.
Spurred on by Emily's enthusiasm 'F of A UK' plans to encourage more research at Antara and is considering an on-line journal for research conducted in Antara or relevant to mental healthcare in India. Contributions are expected from Antara's staff, health professionals and students in the UK and India.
Emily is currently seeking funding for her research project. If you think you can help or are interested in our online journal please contact info@friendsofantarauk.org
