December 2007: Antara's Annual Mental Health Fair attracts thousands
Once a year Antara's usually tranquil 'Antaragram' centre and its verdant grounds, which earn it the nickname "an oasis for troubled minds", is transformed into a buzzing 'mela' (festival). Thousands visit the centre from local communities and Kolkata city, to enjoy games, food, educational stalls, selling of products and dance, drama or music performances.
Organised by staff and patients of the Antaragram community, the fair combines the enjoyment of a fair with some more serious intentions. Firstly, the fair is a powerful means of raising awareness about mental health issues and reducing the stigma associated with it, by literally inviting people into a treatment facility. Secondly, it helps raise much needed funds which help subsidise treatment and ensure Antara can provide free and low-cost healthcare to those who need it.
