Antara's community mourns the loss of one of its key pioneers

On 10th April 2008, 'Friends of Antara UK' received the sad news that Dr. K.L Naraynan, Chief Psychiatrist to Antara had died from a sudden heart attack. Staff and patients were reported to have been shocked by the unexpected passing of one Antara's key workers, and volunteers from the UK described a community in mourning.

Dr. Naraynan had over 20 years experience as a psychiatrist and was well known within Kolkata's health community. As with many of Antara's staff, he was committed to bringing mental healthcare to all, and particularly communities that may otherwise be overlooked. He continued to work for Antara until two weeks prior to his death. He was actively involved in mental health networks, leading conferences at Antara on various current issues in mental health.

Tim Lawes (Chair of  'F of A UK') recalls: " I always remember the trust and respect patients had for Dr. Naraynan and the interest he took in every detail of their care and progress. For many he was the person they felt was on their side during some of the most difficult days of their lives, and I can't think of a greater testament to his gifts as a psychiatrist. I share in the sadness of the Antara Community. Today we have lost both a friend and an inspiration. Our thoughts go to family and friends at this time. We shall look to build on the foundations that Dr. Naraynan helped establish and continue to support Antara's pioneering work in mental healthcare"

Tina Cross (Former Volunteer Coordinator and Committee of  'F of A UK') commented: "I remember him fondly, and I know that he will be greatly missed".
